Printmaking workshop - Polyester Plate Lithograph with Dr Jenny Sanzaro-Nishimura
Join professional printmaker Dr Jenny Sanzaro-Nishimura to learn how to create Polyester Plate Lithograph prints.
Polyester lithographic plates have been available since the r99os. Frequently used in small commercial print shops, these plates are a safe and easy alternative for hand-printing small editions of small images. They are relatively inexpensive and require minimal processing; however, they are not capable of printing a wide tonal range, nor do they accept a dense ink film. The plates are double-sided, made from thick polyester, and both sides are clay-coated.
The plates are translucent, so images may be traced, drawn or laser copied onto them. The clay coating is by nature hydrophilic, attracting and retaining water, and the drawing material attracts ink and rejects water. The plates can be drawn on with black Sharpie pens, no 5 Litho crayons (and touche made from them, but must be heat set), also they may have images laser copied onto them. Images may range from photographic to autographic or abstract. Photocopied images may be added to, using the other drawing materials.
There are no toxic acids or chemicals (turpentine, bitumen) used with the poly plates or processing them, they are quick to produce and print and are a great way of reproducing original drawings. They are great for today’s environmentally conscious studios.
