Spice of Life 2: John Leyland
Spice of Life 2 is a vibrant showcase of the artist's deep appreciation for light, form, and colour.
Through this series, the artist explores how even the most ordinary subjects can become extraordinary when viewed through a creative lens. Each painting invites the viewer to pause, look closer, and rediscover the beauty that often goes unnoticed in everyday life.

About the artist
Originally from Southern England, John arrived in Australia in the early 1960’s.
He is a self-taught artist, who initially discovered his love for art in his final year of school in 1976. Mainly using water colours to portray Australian birdlife, he found a market for his works in some of the local galleries around the Gold Coast.
It wasn’t until John made the move to Bundaberg in 2012 that he changed mediums to acrylic paints. His subject matter is now far broader and includes seascapes, landscapes, portraits and paintings of classic cars. Birds are still one of his favourite subjects though.
John’s most recent award was an honourable mention from Wendy Sharpe at the 2024 Bundaberg Art Prize.
