Creative Glass workshop with Jo Bone (Children aged 9+) (FULLY BOOKED)
As part of our current exhibition 'The Glassery', join glass artist Jo Bone to design and create a unique fused glass tile.
This workshop is fully booked. Please register below to join the waiting list.
Participants will start on paper, creating a suitable design for your tile, before learning how to cut glass to shape. You’ll then translate your design onto a clear glass base using cut or crushed coloured glass, ready for the kiln.
What is glass fusing
Glass fusing is a creative process that involves melting and bonding pieces of glass together to create beautiful and unique artworks. It's like putting together a puzzle made of glass! To start, you gather different types and colours of glass, which can be transparent, opaque, or even textured. These pieces are arranged in a design on a heat-resistant surface, such as a ceramic or stainless steel mould. The arranged glass pieces are then placed inside a kiln, which is a special oven that can reach very high temperatures. The kiln heats up slowly, gradually raising the temperature to around 1400 to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit (760 to 870 degrees Celsius). At these high temperatures, the glass begins to soften and melt. As the glass melts, the individual pieces fuse together, creating a solid and smooth surface. The process of fusing can take several hours, depending on the desired effect and thickness of the glass. Once the glass has fused and cooled down, it can be removed from the kiln. The result is a single, solid piece of glass with the original design intact. This fused glass artwork can be further shaped or polished if desired. Glass fusing offers endless possibilities for creating decorative objects, jewellery, plates, bowls, and more. It allows artists to experiment with colours, shapes, and textures, resulting in stunning and unique creations.
